When lockdown started all routine private and NHS elective surgery ceased in order to free up beds for Covid patients.
Over the last three months the Nuffield has been supporting the NHS by providing theatre space for urgent surgery, such as for cancer. It was a “non-Covid” site so all patients coming to the hospital were carefully screened prior to admission to exclude any that might be infected.
It has been difficult having to keep patients waiting for their surgery. But I am delighted to say that we are now back in business. The restrictions have eased and the NHS does not need all the capacity that the Nuffield has to offer. So we are seeing outpatients again and have resumed cataract surgery. Two lists have been conducted in the last few days and we can now offer a place on an operating list every week.
